Regional Asthma Coalitions in New York State

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that affects an estimated 1.5 million adults and 491,000 children in New York State. More than 162,000 emergency department visits and over 39,000 hospitalizations occur each year due to asthma. The total cost of asthma hospitalizations in New York in 2009 was approximately $652 million. In addition, asthma has led to children missing more than 1.9 million days of daycare, pre-school or school annually.

Regional Asthma Coalitions have been awarded state grants to reduce the burden of asthma in New York State. The coalitions are funded to implement interventions in counties with high rates of asthma-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits. The coalitions will identify and focus services on high risk populations within their regions, convene and engage local stakeholders, and apply a population-based, systems change approach that translates the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program, Expert Panel Report-3 Asthma Guideline into practice (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/asthma/index.htm). The initiative aims to increase the quality of life among individuals living with asthma and to decrease the number of asthma-related hospitalizations, emergency department visits, urgent care visits and school or work days lost.
