What is the Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program?
The New York State Adult Hepatitis Vaccination Program (AHVP) provides free Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccine (Hepatitis shots) to eligible adult New Yorkers through providers participating in the program.

Am I Eligible to Receive Hepatitis Shots Through the AHVP?
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines are available free of charge to adults 19 years of age and older who meet the following conditions:
- Have at least one eligible risk factor for Hepatitis A and/or Hepatitis B infection:
- Hepatitis A
- Men who have sex with men;
- Persons who use injecting (e.g., heroin) or non-injecting (e.g., snort cocaine) drugs;
- Persons with chronic liver disease including Hepatitis C;
- Persons with HIV infection;
- Persons with a blood clotting-factor disorder (e.g., hemophilia).
- Hepatitis B
- Men who have sex with men;
- Persons who use injecting drugs (e.g., heroin);
- Persons with chronic liver disease including Hepatitis C;
- Persons with HIV infection;
- Persons with more than one sex partner during the previous 6 months;
- Persons seeking evaluation or treatment for a sexually transmitted disease (STD);
- Persons receiving dialysis for kidney disease;
- Household contacts or sex partners of people infected with Hepatitis B.
- Hepatitis A
- AND
- Have no health insurance (uninsured); OR
- Have health insurance that does not cover the cost of Hepatitis A and/or Hepatitis B vaccine (underinsured).
Where Can I Get My Hepatitis Shots?
- Contact your local health department to find out about clinic dates and times.
- Many health care facilities participate in the AHVP. Typical facilities that participate in the AHVP include:
- STD and HIV clinics
- New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Addiction Treatment Centers
- Methadone Treatment Centers
- Community Health Centers
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Rural Health Centers
If you are a patient at one of these health care facilities, check with your health care provider to find out if he or she offers free Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B vaccine through the AHVP.
- In addition, many state prisons and county jails offer free Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccine to adult inmates through the AHVP.
How Can Health Care Providers Enroll in the AHVP?
- The following facility types are eligible to enroll in the AHVP:
- STD and HIV clinics
- New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Addiction Treatment Centers
- Methadone Treatment Centers
- Community Health Centers
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Rural Health Centers
