Goals and Benefits

Objectives of the Program

  1. Helps very impaired "difficult" residents with dementia find some common ground to revitalize old social skills, encourage conversation, and establish a more positive relationship.
  2. Provides a social experience and promote a sense of self-identity with the competent self rather than the incompetent dementia self.
  3. Establishes a sense of community among a group of peers, in which they can exercise control and belonging.
  4. Provides an experience in which they can respond positively.

For the Staff

  1. Staff see residents display positive behavior.
  2. Promotes carryover of approaches and attitudes witnessed by staff during the group into daily interactions with residents.
