May 31, 2002 -- Since the last update, Wadsworth Laboratory announced positive results for 16 mosquito pools found in September - October 2001 (Suffolk 16). Note of clarification: Encephalitis or severe neurologic symptoms may not be present in all lab-positive human, bird, and mammal specimens. A number of birds and mammals with no clinical signs of West Nile infection are tested as asymptomatic surveillance specimens. Total number of West Nile virus positive specimens for New York for the year: 732 dead birds, 71 live birds, 316 mosquito pools, 22 horses, and 15 humans (2 deaths). County total West Nile virus positive results for 2001 are:
*One case occurred in a non-NYS Department of Health laboratory worker.
