At the direction of Governor Pataki, the State Health Department went into action immediately to assist New York City in their rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site. In addition, the Governor directed State Health Commissioner Antonia Novello to work with New York City hospitals, Emergency Medical Service providers, the Red Cross, among others to ensure that all health related services were available to New York City to care for those tragically injured in the deplorable events at the World Trade Center, in lower Manhattan. Over the past week, Commissioner Novello visited the family center, the medical examiner's office and Hospitals in the affected area to get the status of the brave men and women injured in the WTC disaster. In addition, the Commissioner visited "Ground Zero" with Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson (See photos). Respiratory Disease Symptoms Fact Sheet for the General Public Emergency Medical Services Response to New York City Project Liberty - Feel Free to Feel Better In response to the intense need for crisis services stemming from the World Trade Center disaster, the New York State Office of Mental Health is implementing Project Liberty, a coordinated outreach and Crisis Counseling Program (CCP) funded by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). Project Liberty will deliver crisis counseling interventions to the individuals, families, and groups in New York City and the surrounding metropolitan counties, who are most dramatically affected by the World Trade Center disaster and its aftermath.
World Trade Center Health Registry The World Trade Center Health Registry is a joint effort involving the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. This Registry has been funded by the federal government to evaluate the long term health effects of 9/11. Please
