Governor Provides $25 Million in Funding to Roswell

Albany, March 31 – Governor George E. Pataki's announcement today that the State will provide $25 million to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the 1996–97 fiscal year is welcome news and will provide immediate relief to the facility as it faces continuing and longstanding deficits, State Health Commissioner Barbara A. DeBuono, M.D. said.

"Roswell Park is in every sense a leader in cancer research, treatment and education," Governor Pataki said. "This action will help ensure that the Institute maintains its stature as a national center of excellence in cancer research and care."

"Governor Pataki's strong and continuing commitment to the future of Roswell is clearly evident," said Dr. DeBuono. "Through his proposals to not only provide greater flexibility for the facility, but also to stabilize its finances, the Governor will ensure Roswell Park is leader in cancer research and services today, and well into the future."

Governor Pataki directed that $25 million be provided in 1996–97 for Roswell Park Cancer Institute, to help alleviate their longstanding fiscal deficit, which will help ensure that the Institute can provide the highest level of care and cancer research in the future.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is a major teaching and research facility with over 1,500 staff. Over 300 graduate students, residents and fellows are trained annually at the facility. Roswell Park is one of only 27 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute. It has developed several innovative cancer screening and treatment tools now in general use. Photodynamic therapy and the PSA screen for prostate cancer are examples. The advanced clinical programs include bone marrow transplant, low dose brachytherapy, high dose chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiosurgery.
