State Health Commissioner to Observe National HIV Testing Day at NYC's Ryan Center

Albany, June 26, 2001 – State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. will hold a news conference at the William H. Ryan Community Health Center on Wednesday, June 27 at 3 p.m. to observe National HIV Testing Day and urge New Yorkers who might be at risk of HIV infection to get tested without delay. Dr. Novello will be joined by staff from the Ryan Center who deal with the effects of the HIV epidemic every day.

Who:   State Health Commissioner Dr. Antonia Novello, Ryan Center staff
What:   Press conference to mark National HIV Testing Day
Where:   William F. Ryan Community Health Center, 110 West 97th Street
(between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenue)
When:   3 p.m., Wednesday, June 27
Why:   The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) estimates that a third of all those who are infected with HIV are not aware they have the virus. In New York, between 130,000 and 180,000 New Yorkers are believed to be living with HIV – nearly one percent of the State's total population. Minority communities are disproportionately affected. Anyone who has HIV can transmit the infection, even if they have no symptoms.
