New York State Department of Health Announces $34.9 Million for Physician Training

Major Commitment to Advancing Medical Training, Biomedical Research

Albany, February 22, 2005 -- The State Health Department, today announced $34.9 million in funding to further strengthen physician residency training programs in 98 teaching hospitals statewide. Today's funding will help support New York's teaching hospitals and advance New York's world-class medical education, training programs and biomedical research efforts.

State Health Department Commissioner Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. said, "The Governor recognizes the importance of ensuring access to skilled training and research for New York's physicians. The patient care provided by young doctors in training is the most critical aspect of their educational experience. New York's comprehensive graduate medical education initiatives provide new physicians with the skills and background they need to flourish in medicine."

The funding announced today builds on the Governor's commitment to reform physician training in New York's academic medical institutions. As a result of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Reform Incentive Pool, New York has helped increase the number of residents training in ambulatory settings by nine percent; minority faculty positions by 22 percent; and hospitals offering academic support to minority students by 26 percent. The funding also helps support cultural diversification training for residents.

For the third consecutive year, the Governor has dedicated a portion of these funds to support skilled clinical research training under the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP). Over $8 million of these funds will support 88 research positions in 26 teaching hospitals and three consortia of medical education institutions. These clinical training projects include research in cancer, heart disease and childhood obesity, among many other medical research areas.

Since 1997, the Governor has dedicated more than $289 million in GME grant awards to New York's teaching hospitals to reform residency training programs.

The following teaching hospitals and consortia have been awarded GME and/or ECRIP funding under the Governor's HCRA initiative:
