Event Held at Bennett Park Montessori Elementary School in Buffalo

ALBANY, NY, September 26, 2005 - The New York State Department of Health today kicked off a five-day Activ8Kids! Promotional Bike Ride and School Recognition Tour in Buffalo. As part of the tour, volunteer bicyclists serving as Activ8Kids! ambassadors will visit seven schools from Buffalo to Albany on their 360-mile tour across Upstate New York this week to promote healthy lifestyles among children. The bike tour will conclude at the Empire Plaza in Albany this Friday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m.

The Activ8Kids! Riding Team visited Bennett Park Montessori Elementary School in Buffalo today to recognize and honor the school for completing the Montessori Outdoor Learning Experience (MOLE) and to gear up for their upcoming 'Walk Our Children to School Day.' The ambassadors shared the Activ8Kids! message with the children to encourage good eating habits and increased physical activity to maintain their health.

New York's Activ8Kids! campaign, developed by Governor George E. Pataki and the State Department of Health, promotes the consumption of at least five (5) fruits and vegetables; participation in at least one hour (1) of physical activity; and no more than two (2) hours of screen-time by children each day.

"The goal of the Activ8Kids! Promotional Bike Ride and School Recognition Tour is to bring home the Activ8kids! message to children and families throughout New York," State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. said. "Activ8Kids! is a program children can enjoy and follow easily to increase physical activity, as well as eat more fruits and vegetables. We are encouraging parents, schools and the community to develop events and programs that will energize children and get them involved in the decisions that will help them manage their lifestyles and health."

From an educational and historical perspective, New York's Erie Canal system will be highlighted during the Activ8Kids! Promotional Bike Ride and School Recognition Tour. The tour will follow New York's Erie Canal trail, with events scheduled at schools in Buffalo, Victor, Auburn, Canastota, and Niskayuna, with the final event culminating in Albany.
