51 Adult Care Facilities Share $2.8 Million in Grants to Increase Air Conditioning in Resident Rooms
ALBANY, April 25, 2007 - New York State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., today announced a total of $2.8 million in State grants to 51 Adult Care Facilities (ACF) across the State to provide increased air conditioning in resident rooms.
The Adult Care Facility Air Conditioning Initiative grants, administered by the Department of Health, are the result of a competitive process under which operators of adult homes and enriched housing programs applied for funding to support the installation, operation and maintenance of air conditioning in resident rooms. Awards were capped at $75,000 per facility.
In distributing the grant funds, the Department of Health gave priority to applicants whose residents demonstrated the highest level of need, including but not limited to those with psychiatric disabilities and the elderly, and with consideration to applicants in the greatest financial need of such assistance.
"Our goal is to ensure increased comfort for residents of adult care facilities," Commissioner Daines said. "The heat of the summer takes its toll on everyone, but vulnerable populations like elderly people suffer more. While we accepted proposals to replace air-conditioning systems or repair functional equipment, we gave preference to ACFs that currently do not have sufficient air conditioning. We felt that this was the area of greatest need for this first round of awards."
Applicants were required to confirm that their proposals would not result in additional operating costs being passed on to ACF residents. In addition, facilities with any enforcement issues will have to come into full compliance before accessing the funds.
A second competition for ACF air conditioning grants competition is anticipated later in the state fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2008.
