Uninsured New Yorkers Urged to Sign up for Health Insurance During 'Cover the Uninsured Week'

ALBANY, NY (March 23, 2009) -- In recognition of National Cover the Uninsured Week, March 22-28, State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., today urged New Yorkers who lack health insurance to take advantage of free or reduced-cost state health insurance programs for children and adults.

An estimated 2.5 million New Yorkers lack health insurance. Of that number, all of New York's 434,000 uninsured children and teens are eligible but not enrolled in the State's Child Health Plus or Medicaid programs, and 800,000 adults are eligible but not enrolled in Family Health Plus or Medicaid.

"Cover the Uninsured Week provides the perfect opportunity to educate families about the availability of these programs and connect those in need to health insurance," said Commissioner Daines.

Governor David A. Paterson is leading the effort to enroll all uninsured children and teens and eligible adults in New York's public health insurance programs. Last year Governor Paterson expanded income eligibility for the state's Child Health Plus program. In his proposed new budget, Governor Paterson continues funding for that expansion and expands income eligibility for adults in Family Health Plus.

The State Health Department has launched an extensive media and outreach campaign to enroll eligible New Yorkers. The Department is also streamlining program rules, simplifying the renewal process, and creating a Statewide Enrollment Center to reduce the number of New Yorkers who fall off public health insurance rolls despite their continued eligibility
