Media Advisory: New York's Two Top Docs Observe National 'Donate Life' Month By Registering as Organ Donors
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Richard F. Daines and New York City Health Commissioner Dr.Thomas R. Frieden will enroll in New York State's "Donate Life" Organ and Tissue Donor Registry – and urge other New Yorkers to do the same in recognition of National Donate Life Month.
- NYS Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D
- NYC Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., MPH
- Comedian Richard Ramirez and 11-year-old Gillian Cohen, both recipients of lifesaving organ transplants
- 18-year-old Cody Sharp, recipient of a sight-restoring cornea transplant
Encourage New Yorkers to give the gift of life by joining the state's organ and tissue donor registry. Residents of New York make up approximately 9 percent of individuals awaiting organ transplants nationwide, but this state's donation rate lags behind other states.
State law now allows New Yorkers to give legal consent to donate tissues and organs. Until recently, the law allowed only an expression of intent, which family members could override. People who registered as donors before July 23, 2008, should re-enroll to ensure that their wishes are honored.
