Media Advisory: Annual Memorial Service Honors EMS Professionals
Special Tribute to Those Fallen in Line of Duty
ALBANY, N.Y. (May 19, 2009) - State officials, legislative leaders and other New Yorkers will join Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals, their family members and friends on Wednesday at 11 a.m. on the Empire State Plaza to recognize the sacrifices of EMS professionals in providing New Yorkers with emergency care and transport to hospitals.
Special tribute will be paid to two EMS professionals -- Edward P. Mueller of the West Islip Fire Department in Suffolk County and Norman Haines of the Laurens Emergency Squad in Otsego County -- who lost their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony also honors active EMS workers as well as 36 individuals whose names have been placed on the New York State EMS Memorial since its dedication in May 2004.
A procession and massing of the colors will be conducted by the New York City Fire Department Emergency Medical Services Pipes and Drum Band and the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System Center for Emergency Medical Services Honor Guard. Donald Faeth, New York State EMS Council Chair, and State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., will lay this year's Memorial Wreath.
