Thermometer Requirements for VFC Providers
September, 2011
Dear Vaccine Program Providers:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) Bureau of Immunization are now requiring that refrigerators and freezers storing Vaccines for Children (VFC) vaccine must have a calibrated thermometer inside each storage compartment. Each device must be covered by a Certificate of Traceability and Calibration. The traceability declaration confirms that the measurement standards and instruments used during calibration of the product are traceable to an internationally recognized standards agency such as the International Organization of Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC), or the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
By November 1, 2011, VFC providers are required to have calibrated thermometers covered by a Certificate of Traceability and Calibration in all units where publicly funded vaccine is stored. Providers should maintain a valid Certificate of Traceability and Calibration that will be available for Department of Health regional representatives to review at the time of a site visit. Failure to have the appropriate thermometers and documentation will result in temporary suspension of order privileges.
Attached is the "New York State Department of Health Bureau of Immunization Thermometer Guide for Storage and Handling of Publicly Purchased Vaccine." This document will provide guidance in purchasing appropriate thermometers.
Thank you for your continuing efforts to protect the health of New York State's children against vaccine preventable diseases. If you have any questions regarding this letter please call the NYS Vaccine Program Hotline at 1-800-543-7468.
Sincerely,
Debra Blog, M.D., M.P.H.
Director
Bureau of Immunization
