Tips for Safe Motorcycle Riding

  • Be sure you are properly licensed.
  • Take a rider education course.
  • Always wear a US DOT approved motorcycle helmet!
  • Wear the proper gear!
    • Shatter proof eye protection
      • Eye protection guards eyes from flying debris, can reduce glare, and helps prevent tearing which can blur vision.
      • Only use tinted eyewear during the day.
  • Pants and jackets should be heavyweight such a heavy denim or leather.
  • Shoes should be durable and cover the ankles such as leather boots.
    • Sandals and sneakers do not provide good protection.
  • Do your best to be seen!
    • Wear brightly colored clothing.
    • Wear a reflective jacket or vest.
    • Wear a white motorcycle helmet.
    • Maintain the most visible lane position.
    • Use reflective decals on your motorcycle and motorcycle helmet.
    • Use hand signals.
    • Use auxiliary driving lights or headlight modulators.
  • Ride with the assumption that other motorists do not see you.
  • Avoid blind spots of other vehicles, especially commercial trucks.
  • Ride for conditions.
    • Ride at a safe speed.
    • Avoid riding on wet roads, especially right after it starts to rain.
