CACFP Policy Memo Number 69

DOH-CACFP: Number 69 (04/02)

TO: CACFP Sponsoring Organizations of Day Care Centers

FROM: Jeanne Colegrove, State Director, Child and Adult Care Food Program

SUBJECT: Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Program

The USDA is pleased to announce the latest technical assistance material for CACFP programs, the revised Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs (FBG). Copies of the FBG will be shipped directly to your organization within the next month. They can be used immediately, but must be fully implemented in all CACFP programs by July 1, 2003.

The Food Buying Guide has a great new look with an updated design, including color-coded tabs for each section, pictures, and new easy to read charts and graphics. There are hundreds of new food items and pack sizes for existing foods. As before, the FBG is the tool to use to determine the amount of food to purchase and the contribution each food makes toward meeting meal requirements. The guide should be used by managers and cooks at centers where meals are prepared on-site. It should also be used in managing food service contracts in facilities in which meals are purchased from a vendor.

New York CACFP will ship one guide for your Sponsoring Organization and each center under your sponsorship. All of the manuals will be shipped to the Sponsor Administrator of your organization within the next month. Sponsors must distribute a copy of the Food Buying Guide to each CACFP center under their sponsorship.
