Orange County's Healthy Orange initiative began in 2006 to address improved nutrition, increased physical activity and a tobacco free lifestyle to combat chronic disease in Orange County Residents. Community organizations and individuals were invited to join Healthy Orange to promote a healthy lifestyle for children and families through education, communication, collaborations, advocacy and policy change. The response to the staff team has been fantastic with close to 40 community partners joining the quest and becoming devoted to Healthy Orange.

Some of the team's accomplishments include:

  • A nationally recognized Farm to School Program in the Enlarged City School District.
  • Free smoking cessation programs for all residents wishing to quit.
  • More than 20 worksite wellness programs.
  • Assisted in the development of community gardens in three cities.
  • Creation and support of school gardens, peaceful playgrounds, non-food fundraisers, junior wellness committees and a lacrosse equipment program for an inner-city recreation department.
