The leadership team of Correctional Health Services at the DOHMH is comprised of ten exceptional and dedicated public health professionals who, together with their outstanding staff, work to improve the medical, dental, mental health care, and discharge planning services provided to inmates within the eleven NYC jails. They ensure appropriate and timely care is provided at intake, throughout an individual's incarceration and upon discharge to the community. Providing services in jails presents complex challenges yet this team effectively manages a broad array of services including substance abuse treatment and detoxification, the implementation of an electronic medical record, sexually transmitted infection diagnosis and treatment, innovative mental health programming, and making connections to care, housing, and other public benefits upon release -- just to name a few. Working collaboratively with the Department of Correction, these team members measurably improve the health of over 80,000 people who are incarcerated in City jails annually.
