The SCDHS Division of Public Health's Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control is responsible for investigating reportable communicable diseases in Suffolk County. The team has demonstrated tenacity in tracking contacts and suggesting potentially life-saving preventive measures. In recent years, the team has informed medical practitioners and the public on health issues ranging from Ebola to a local increase in pertussis cases, the latter resulting in greater statewide awareness of the importance of preventive measures and immunization. As part of a Public Health Emergency Response Team, the group is responsible for monitoring for agents that would endanger public health and for receipt and dispensing of medical countermeasures in the event of a public health threat or emergency. The Team dispensed immunizations following Superstorm Sandy and in response to a potential hepatitis A exposure at a local restaurant. The Team also directs POD (Point of Dispensing) clinic training for county volunteers and first responders, garnering excellent reviews by the NYSDOH and the CDC.
