Hospitalization Rates (Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System-SPARCS)
Data on hospitalizations are collected through the hospital inpatient discharge data system, SPARCS. Data are not available on events that did not result in a hospitalization, such as cases that were only treated in hospital emergency room. Each hospitalization receives an ICD-9 code at discharge which indicates the primary reason for the hospitalization. The codes included in the unintentional injury category are E800-E928 (excluding E870-E879). Traumatic brain injury includes ICD-9 codes 800-801.9, 803-804.9, 850-854.1,950.1-950.3, 959.01 and 995.55. The codes included in the unintentional falls category are E880-E888 (excluding E887). Poisoning hospitalization injury includes ICD-9 codes E8500-E8509, E851, E8520-E8559,E856, E857, E8580-E8669, E867, E8680-E8699, E9500-E9529, E9620-E9629, and E972. The rates presented are per 10,000 persons in a specific age group or the total population.
