Binge Drinking (NYS Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System-BRFSS)
All data relates to adults 18 years of age or older. The BRFSS is a telephone based survey that collects information on self-reported health related behaviors. Binge drinking is defined as respondents who reported that they have had 5 or more alcoholic drinks on one or more occasions in the past month.

For more information, contact BRFSS Coordinator at (518)473-0673.

High School Student Binge Drinking (Youth Risk Behavior Survey-YRBS)
The YRBS is a survey of public high school students developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administered in New York State by the NYS Department of Education. The survey is conducted every two years. Each time a new sample of schools and students is selected. The survey asks high school students (grade 9-12) questions concerning health-risk behaviors. Binge drinking is defined as having 5 or more alcoholic drinks on one or more occasions in the past month.

Drug-Related Hospitalization Rates (Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System-SPARCS)
Data on hospitalizations are collected through the hospital inpatient discharge data system (SPARCS - Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System). Thus, data are not available on events that did not result in a hospitalization, such as cases that were only treated in hospital emergency room. Each hospitalization receives an ICD-9 code at discharge which indicates the primary reason for the hospitalization. The ICD-9codes included in the drug-related hospitalizations category were 292, 304, 305.1-305.9,648.3, 655.5, 763.5, 779.4, 779.5, 965.0, 967.0, 968.5, 969.6,969.7, 760.70, 760.72,760.73,760.75, 760.79, E850-E858, E950.0-E950.2, E962.0, E980.0-E980.2.

Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Injuries (NYS Department of Motor Vehicles)
Data include persons killed or injured in motor vehicle crashes where alcohol was considered to be a factor. It also includes pedestrians, bicyclists and all other non-vehicle involved persons as well as vehicle occupants. These data were gathered from police reports. Crashes are reported by the county where the event occurred.
