Data notes:
- a National Center for Health Statistics Bridged Race Population Estimates
- New York State and county population estimates are from the National Center for Health Statistics, bridged-race postcensal population estimates. These estimates are prepared under a collaborative arrangement with the U.S. Census Bureau. They are generated using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) methodology that redistributes multiple race populations into single race categories.
- b Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), US Department of Labor, The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program
- A federal-state cooperative effort in which monthly estimates of total employment and unemployment are prepared for approximately 7,300 areas. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for the concepts, definitions, technical procedures, validation, and publication of the estimates that State employment security agencies prepare under agreement with BLS.
- c Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, U.S. Census Bureau
- The US Census Bureau with support from other Federal agencies, created the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) program to provide more current estimates of selected income and poverty statistics than the most recent decennial census. Estimates are created for states, counties, and school districts. The main objective of this program is to provide updated estimates of income and poverty statistics for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions.
- d Vital Records
- Information is extracted from birth, death and fetal death certificates. When percentages are calculated records with missing information for the indicator of interest are excluded from the calculation. Population based rates use population estimates provided by the US Bureau. ICD-10 codes are used for cause of death.
- e Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System-SPARCS
- Data on hospitalizations are collected through the hospital inpatient discharge data system. Each hospitalization receives an ICD-9 code at discharge which indicates the primary reason for the hospitalization. Data are not available on events that did not result in hospitalization, such as cases that were only treated in a hospital emergency room.
- f The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control
- The Bureau maintains surveillance of all reportable communicable diseases and conditions. Laboratories, hospitals and physicians are required to report cases of these diseases to their local health department. Rates are computed and presented per 100,000 population
Note: In 2008, New York City Vital Records adopted the National Center for Health Statistics standard birth certificate. This certificate has been used for births occurring in New York State outside of New York City since 2004. According to the New York City Health Department publication, Summary of Vital Statistics 2008 1, the use of the new certificate has resulted in some data quality concerns. There is a potential for variables such as prenatal care and race/ethnicity to be impacted by a larger than normal number of unknowns and miscoding. Caution should be used when comparing the 2008 data to previous years.
