Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Annual statewide telephone surveillance system designed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that monitors factors contributing to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. New York State's BRFSS sample represents the non-institutionalized adult household population, aged 18 years and older.

Comments: There are potential sources of error associated with a telephone survey. People without telephone service or who live in non-residential settings such as military bases or nursing homes are not included. Because estimates are based on results from a sample of the population that is interviewed, there may be some error in the estimate if the sample does not closely resemble the population from which it is taken.

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) – National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
NHANES is a population-based survey designed to collect information on the health and nutrition of the civilian non-institutionalized U.S. population. It has two components: a home interview and health tests that are done in a mobile exam center. Data from NHANES have been used to create and update the U.S. pediatric growth charts, to set national baseline estimates for cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and to provide information on obesity, use of dietary supplements, osteoporosis, etc.
