Data Protection Review Board (DPRB)

In 1979, a seventeen-member DPRB was established in New York Codes Rules and Regulations (NYCRR), Title 10, section 400.18. This quasi-independent entity is charge with the responsibility of reviewing requests made by health facilities, state agencies, and researchers for patient data for the purpose of furthering the healthcare system as it relates to the health and well-being of mankind.

The DPRB currently has thirteen members whose responsibility is to review each request for identifiable data, and by consensus, decide whether to approve or disapprove the release of the data being requested.

Board members listen to about 100 requests a year and they freely devote their time, expertise, and knowledge in determining whether or not an applicant is able and willing to abide by the Department's policy regarding the confidentiality of patient data.
