Summary of Inpatient Output Update for 1999

January

The items below summarize the changes documented in the SPARCS Inpatient Output Data Dictionary for implementation in calendar year 1999.

  • Effective with all millennium compliant submissions to SPARCS, Alternate Level of Care (ALC) and Leave of Absence (LOA) information will be reported to SPARCS as date ranges using UB-92 defined Occurrence Span Codes. This information is now accumulated in newly defined Non-Acute Care data elements that are described below.

    Element Name Element Number
    Non-Acute Care Type 115
    Non-Acute Care From Date 116
    Non-Acute Care Through Date 117

NOTE:  The Non-Acute Care data elements are defined in an array that occurs three (3) times, which allows for the reporting of multiple ALC or LOA events during one hospital stay. This is a significant change from previous years.

  • Listed below are the data elements that will be replaced by collection of the Non-Acute Care data elements described above.

    Element Name Element Number
Type of Alternate Care Required 18
    Date Alternate Care Required 19
Alternate Level of Care Days 44

  • The algorithm for populating Total Alternate Level of Care Days (Data Element 20) and Total Leave of Absence Days (Data Element 46) depends on whether the data was reported using UDS Version 4.1 or Version 5. If Version 4.1 was used, these fields are populated with reported values. If Version 5 was used, these fields are populated with calculated values.

  • Effective 12/1/1998, the edits associated with the reporting of E-codes were changed to allow all E-codes to be reported as Other Diagnosis Codes 1 - 14. It should be noted that the edits that require E-codes to be reported in the External Cause-of- Injury field (Data Element 77) and the Place-of-Injury field (Data Element 78) have not changed.

Listed below is a summary of the changes made to the appendices.
