- Clinical criteria:
- An acute illness with
- a discrete onset of symptoms and
- jaundice, or ALT =400 u/L)
- Laboratory criteria:

- positive confirmatory anti-HCV or HCV RNA and
- IgM anti-HAV and IgM anti-HBc negative
- Confirmed case classification:
- Meets both the clinical and laboratory criteria.
- Acute hepatitis C cases are difficult to diagnose for several reasons; therefore, it is likely that these data reflect an underreporting of acute hepatitis C cases.
