Arsenic Mine - Evaluation of Shallow Residential Soils

Health Consultation

The New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH), in partnership with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), prepared a Health Consultation for the Arsenic Mine Site located in the Town of Kent, Putnam County, New York.

ATSDR was asked by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to evaluate soil samples collected by the US EPA at residential properties on the Arsenic Mine site. The samples were collected in 2017 and 2018. The purpose of this health consultation is to provide residents with the best information possible about how environmental contaminants might affect their health and provide advice on appropriate public health actions to address current exposures evaluated in the consultation. Based on the information presented in the health consultation, ATSDR, in consultation with the NYS DOH, determined that current and potential future exposures to arsenic in shallow residential soil on the Arsenic Mine Site is an urgent public health hazard. ATSDR has issued a public health advisory urging the US EPA to take immediate actions to mitigate harmful exposures to arsenic.

This health consultation has been prepared by the NYS DOH for the Arsenic Mine Site.
