Summary/Results of Innovation Fund Grants

On Thursday, September 22, the DOH Balancing Incentive Program held their BIP Innovation Fund Grants Results Meeting in Conference Room 6 at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY. The Innovation Fund grants challenged providers to develop creative solutions to the LTC delivery system and enhance community-based long term services and supports (LTSS) for Medicaid beneficiaries in NYS. Fifty-four (54) Innovations Fund grants were awarded on a competitive basis. The results of these projects will help the DOH DLTC to formulate long range plans and make changes to the LTSS delivery system. The meeting featured presentations from nine (9) outstanding projects. Andrew Segal, the new Director of the Division of Long Term Care, welcomed attendees. Laurie Lucinski, Acting Director of the Balancing Incentive Program, and Phyllis Howard, Grant Program Lead, gave opening remarks and an overview of the BIP Innovation Fund Grants. Four (4) featured presentations were given twenty (20) minutes and five (5) highlighted presentations were given ten (10) minutes to present on:

  • An overview of their project
  • Special features or highlights
  • Healthcare savings
  • Lessons learned
  • Key components that could be replicated
  • Sustainability plan (if applicable)
  • Recommendations/suggestions to share
  • Conclusion about how/why their grant award was put to good use

Video vignettes were created by four (4) different grant programs, and two (2) of those videos were presented at the end of the meeting. A poster session, comprising of project posters from seventeen (17) organizations, was on display before and throughout the meeting. This provided an opportunity for other grant programs to exhibit their best features and their impact on the LTC delivery system. It also provided a great environment for networking among attendees, which included grant awardees, Managed Care Organizations, advocates and associations, legislative representation, and DOH and OPWDD staff.

Overall, the BIP Innovation Fund Grants Results Meeting successfully showcased the significance of the Innovation Fund on the New York State Long Term Care Delivery System, and the exceptional work done by the grant programs for New Yorkers in need of long term services and supports.
