Medicaid Redesign Team: Affordable Housing Work Group

In January 2011, the Medicaid Redesign Team (MRT) was charged with recommending changes that would reduce the dramatic growth in Medicaid spending in New York while maintaining or improving health outcomes for Medicaid members. The MRT Affordable Housing Work Group identified increasing the availability of affordable supportive housing for high-utilizers Medicaid members who are homeless or living in institutional settings as a significant opportunity for reducing Medicaid cost growth.

The Workgroup is chaired by Emily Engel the Director of the Bureau of Social Care and Community Supports. The MRT supportive housing initiative funds tenancy support services and rental subsidies targeted to vulnerable high-utilizer Medicaid members. State Agency partners include; Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), Office of Mental Health (OMH), Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, (OASAS), and the Department of Health´s AIDS Institute.
