Media Advisory: State Health Commissioner Presents Awards in recognition of World AIDS Day 2008 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center

ALBANY, N.Y. (Dec. 2, 2008) – New York State Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., will mark World AIDS Day 2008, today at 1 p.m. at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany to honor New Yorkers' outstanding contributions in the field of HIV and AIDS.

The ceremony will observe the 21st World AIDS Day by recognizing those individuals who have committed their time and extraordinary efforts to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Today, approximately 116,000 New Yorkers are reported living with either HIV or AIDS. New York remains the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic, with 16 percent of all people living with AIDS nationally.

Twelve awards will be presented at today's World AIDS Day ceremony at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. Award nominations were submitted from Ryan White CARE networks throughout New York and by the State Health Department.
