Statement From New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald On National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day

ALBANY, N.Y. (August 21, 2024) – "Today on National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day we remember the far too many lives lost to the overdose epidemic; a public health crisis that has been deeply felt in all corners of New York State and the nation.

"Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid that has claimed an unprecedented number of lives. It's 50 to 100 times stronger than heroin and has contributed to nearly half of all overdose deaths in New York State.

"This year's observance day theme is 'Educate, Act, Prevent.' Today, I thank those who step up each and every day in the fight against this deadly scourge, including community members working diligently to reach those especially vulnerable to overdose, our law enforcement and first responders, dedicated medical professionals and all of those who are on the front lines of this epidemic, raising public awareness to reach more people through education and outreach efforts.

"As a physician and the state's doctor, I remain committed in our fight to prevent overdose deaths and to save lives. This means leveraging every resource available to expand access to the lifesaving naloxone, increase the availability of fentanyl testing strips and implement innovative outreach, education and harm reduction strategies.

"This solemn day is a reminder of the work that lies ahead. We will continue to collaborate with our partner agencies and state leaders to ensure our work makes a difference in the lives of people who have been impacted by this potentially lethal substance."
