Preventive Dentistry Program for Deaf/Adolescent Children

The Preventive Dentistry Program for Deaf/Handicapped Children is operated by Bellevue Hospital in New York City. This program provides health education and treatment services for deaf children seen at the Bellevue dental clinic and at nearby schools for deaf children in Manhattan.

Through the program, deaf and hearing-impaired children are introduced to dental equipment and procedures. Their parents are taught basic preventive dental techniques and are given treatment plans for approval. During the year 2004, dental services were provided for more than 341 deaf patients at the Bellevue clinic, and 271 deaf students participated in a preventive dental program established at PS-47, School for the Deaf.
