  • 28 years of service

Margaret Bermel, MBA, served in Suffolk County for 28 years, from 2005-2014 as the Director of the Office of Health Administrative Services. A diligent leader, Margaret provided direction for the administrative and financial functions of the department. Through Margaret’s adept management the finance division has capably supported the function for the entire department and enabled programs to provide high quality health services to the community. Margaret led the way in securing funds that enhanced patient care services at Suffolk County Health Centers. Following super-storm Sandy Margaret developed emergency procurement procedures and led the finance staff in the Emergency Operations Center providing interagency aid to the Incident Command System finance section. Margaret also negotiated contracts and administered grants in support of essential public health services. In 2010, Margaret created the National Association of Counties (NACo) award-winning Grants-Management System, a centralized tracking and coordination system that follows grants through every stage of development and has resulted in improved efficiency for the Agency.

Margaret Bermel died earlier this year on June 26, 2014. Her contributions to public health will be remembered by many for years to come.
