This multicounty team developed and coordinated the first combined county emergency preparedness exercise in Western New York. It was through their efforts, under the leadership of Al Cheverie, that they successfully planned, coordinated and implemented the "Anthrax in Autumn" Point of Distribution (POD) exercise at (GCC) in Batavia, N.Y. A strong volunteer presence was developed through working with Genesee Community College, their nursing students, students from SUNY Brockport and Barker Central School along with VALOR Medical Reserve Corp members and the Lake Plains Community Care Network. The POD accomplished more than just meeting the required deliverable. The exercise included in depth planning with dual county resources, participation from college and community members, increased public awareness as a result of adequate advertisement and media engagement, further developing cross-jurisdictional integration of the Genesee and Orleans county health departments and enhancing the department's ability to meet the needs of the residents during a public health emergency.
