Public Drinking Water Team, Onondaga County Health Department

Rob Furey, Public Health Engineer II, Shawn Rush, Public Health Engineer III, Jeff Till, Director of Public Health Engineering

The Bureau of Public Health Engineering's Public Water Supply Program has been faced with a number of challenges this year including new regulations regarding legionella and lead testing of drinking water in schools. Staff has reached out to the local chapter of ASHRE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers) in an effort to locate cooling towers in Onondaga County and help improve the accuracy of the database used to monitor sampling. The team has had numerous conversations with local school officials in order to assist them with the new requirements for lead testing, subsequent necessary remediation, and notification procedures. The team has done excellent work dealing with new regulations with very short implementation timeframes, many questions from regulated facilities, and addressing public concerns on these issues.
