Emergency medical services (EMS) maintain a position between public health and public safety. Tom Lateulere always took the approach that prehospital emergency medical care is inextricably linked to healthy community initiatives and the maintenance of a competent healthcare workforce, each of which are staples in the local health department Community Health Improvement Plan. Tom took education and training in Suffolk County to a new level by creating a vision that combines quality data-driven prehospital care with state-of-the-art instructional techniques. Tom set the standard for transitioning "EMS Instructors" to "EMS Educators." He initiated the first-of-its-kind Regional Continuing Medical Education Oversight Program. In this program, curricula are physician-driven and objective-based, with post-class validation tools documenting student learning. Some of his other innovative contributions that include sharing best practices through the creation of an on-line "Instructor's Tool Box," and using high fidelity mannequins, life tissue, and cadaver lab training to enhance the student experience.
