In 2016, Suffolk County's Arthropod Disease Laboratory, Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control, Office of Vector Control, and Office of Health Education, worked together to develop Suffolk County's Zika Action Plan. This plan was adopted by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) as the model for related plans, which NYS required all local health departments to create. Suffolk's decades of experience in mosquito surveillance and management, and the synergistic work of staff with expertise across multiple disciplines, allowed it to develop a plan that includes comprehensive environmental and human disease surveillance, public education about Zika prevention, and identification and commitment of staff to join state-coordinated Rapid Response Teams in the event of a Zika outbreak. The recognition by NYSDOH of Suffolk's Zika Action Plan as the "gold standard" demonstrates Suffolk's continuing commitment and ability to protect the public health of its residents.
