Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health

One of the goals of the New York State Department of health is to eliminate disparities in health care access by increasing the availability and quality of health care services for New York's underserved populations.

The AIDS Institute has a long and unprecedented history of dedicating resources specifically for LGBT New Yorkers. In 1994, the AIDS Institute developed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) HIV Prevention Initiative. This initiative supports the provision of effective behavior-based HIV prevention interventions and HIV-related supportive services - including alcohol, substance use and mental health counseling - that address the needs to gay men/men who have sex with men (MSM), lesbians/women who have sex with women (WSW), persons who have sex with multiple genders, and transgender individuals.

In 2008, in a cooperative effort with NYSDOH Center for Community Health and the LGBT Health and Human Services Network, the AIDS Institute developed the LGBT Health and Human Services Unit in an effort to address the non-HIV related health disparities of LGBT persons in NYS. This initiative supports improved access to health care and supportive services, improving health outcomes and quality of life for LGBT individuals, capacity building and increasing community awareness of the health and human service needs of LGBT communities across New York State.
