December 15, 2014 Ending the Epidemic Task Force On June 29, 2014 Governor Andrew M. Cuomo made an important announcement, in which he detailed a three-point plan to 'Bend the Curve' and move us closer to the end of the AIDS epidemic in New York State. The goal is to reduce the number of new HIV infections to just 750 by 2020. The three-point plan includes: (1) Identify persons with HIV and link them to care. (2) Link and retain persons diagnosed in health care to maximize viral suppression and prevent further transmission. (3) Facilitate access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for high risk persons to keep them HIV negative. The Task Force has been established in support of Governor Cuomo's three-point plan to decrease new HIV infections. The Task Force will provide expert advice on implementation and monitoring strategies, focusing on New York State's highly successful existing HIV prevention and care efforts. Member of the Task Force will address areas of prevention, policy, access to care, surveillance, messaging and biomedical advances via four committees: (1) Prevention, (2) Care, (3) Data, and (4) Housing and supportive services. This initiative will maximize the availability of life-saving, transmission-interrupting treatment for HIV, saving lives and improving the health of New Yorkers. None
December 9, 2014 Early Intervention Coordinating Council The Early Intervention Coordinating Council is established in Public Health Law to advise and assist the New York State Department of Health as the lead state agency for the Early Intervention Program which provides services to infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. December 4, 2014 Committee on Codes, Regulations and Legislation, Committee on Establishment and Project Review, and the Full Public Health and Health Planning Council Meeting The Codes Committee reviews new and revised regulations relating to medical facility operational and structural standards, including quality of care and the need for the facilities and/or services. Reviews amendments to the State Sanitary Code and other matters referred by the Commissioner. The Committee on Establishment and Project Review is responsible for reviewing the CON applications involving construction, service changes or establishment, and transfers of ownership. The PHHPC has a broad array of advisory and decision-making responsibilities with respect to New York State's public health and health care delivery system. It is charged with adopting and amending the Sanitary Code and health care facility, home care agency, and hospice operating regulations. The PHHPC also makes decisions concerning the establishment and transfer of ownership of health care facilities, home care agencies and hospice programs. It makes recommendations to the Commissioner of Health concerning major construction projects, service changes, and equipment acquisitions in health care facilities and home care agencies. It also advises the Commissioner on issues related to the preservation and improvement of public health. The Council's powers and duties are set forth in section 225 of the Public Health Law. None
December 1, 2014 2014 World AIDS Day - Commissioners Special Recognition Awards and The New York State Youth Sexual Health Plan Panel Discussion December 1st was designated World AIDS Day in 1988 as a day of remembrance and a day to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic throughout the world. For the past 16 years, the AIDS Institute (AI) hosted a display of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt in observance of World AIDS Day (WAD) in Albany. The Commissioners Special Recognition Awards honor those that are committed to reducing new HIV infections among New Yorkers thus contributing to the state's plan to bring the AIDS epidemic to an end by 2020. The NYS Youth Sexual Health Plan Panel discussion is to address the HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention needs of adolescents and young adults by promoting positive, healthy, and informed choices. The panel will be moderated by youth and will include government, community and youth leaders who will speak briefly about implementation of the Plan, including best practices, connections to current public health initiatives, and personal experience with regard to sexual health. November 20, 2014 Drug Utilization Review Board Meeting The Drug Utilization Review Board consists of experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and consumer representatives appointed by the Commissioner of Health to serve in an advisory capacity. The group provides clinical guidance to the Commissioner regarding pharmacy issues for the Medicaid Program. They bring specialized expertise in areas such as mental health, geriatrics, internal medicine, HIV/AIDS and children's health and help to ensure that prescriptions for outpatient drugs are appropriate, medically necessary and not likely to result in adverse medical consequences. November 20, 2014 New York State AIDS Advisory Council Meeting The New York State AIDS Advisory Council (AAC) was created in 1983 by Public Health Law, Article 27-E, Section 2778. The AAC is responsible for advising the Commissioner of Health and making recommendations about issues related to HIV and AIDS. None
November 19, 2014 New York State Advisory Council on Lead Poisoning Prevention Meeting The NYS Lead Poisoning Prevention Advisory Council, mandated by Section 1370-b of the Laws of 1992, will hold a meet in Albany. The purpose of the meeting is to review current childhood lead poisoning prevention efforts on the part of the New York State Department of Health and discuss future strategies to reduce or eliminate the risk of lead hazard exposure. Due to inclement weather, this meeting was canceled.
