Refugee Health Program Information for Providers

The Refugee Health Program seeks applications from qualified, licensed health care providers, agencies, facilities, and local health units in New York State (excluding New York City) to provide health assessments to new refugee arrivals. Refugee health assessments must be completed within 90 days of the refugee's entry into the U.S. to be reimbursed with federal Refugee Medical Assistance funds.

Provider requirements:

  • must be a licensed provider, such as a physician, hospital, community health center, county health department, or clinic that serves adult and pediatric patients
  • a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or public health/extended role nurse may conduct the exam under the supervision of a physician
  • participation in the federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program (or willingness to become a Vaccines for Children provider if not currently participating)
  • language interpretation must be provided to all refugees who do not speak English, whether by a bilingual or multilingual staff member or an interpreter service
  • providers work closely with resettlement agencies for coordination of services and any needed referrals
