CEREAL Purchased Cereals with greater than 6g of added sugar per dry oz are not allowed Avoid:

Choose:

-Whole grain cereals

-Cereals with at least 51% whole grains (Whole grain listed first on ingredient label)

-Cereals with no added sugar

-Highly processed grain products with added salt, sugar or fat, such as flavored rice (Rice A Roni), flavored noodles (Ramen), stuffing mixes

-Whole grains such as Brown rice, Whole wheat pastas and Whole grain pancake mix

MILK/DAIRY/CHEESE Purchased Only Fluid 1% or fat free, non-flavored milk is allowed. Milk substitutes with less than 7g of protein per 8 oz. serving are not allowed. Avoid:

-High fat, high sodium dairy products such as processed cheeses and cheese foods
Choose:

-More low fat or fat free dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese (These are more expensive items and your clients may not be able to afford them when they shop)

-Milk coupons from local stores if provided by your food bank

Purchased Spam and bacon are not allowed. Avoid:

Processed Meats including: hot dogs/franks, fish sticks/breaded fish items, sausage (all types), canned beef stew, corned beef hash, cold cuts/luncheon meats, chicken nuggets/chicken patties/breaded chicken tenders, canned‐ pork'n beans, beef ravioli/spaghetti and meatballs, and canned ham
Choose:

-Lean cuts of meats such as 90% lean ground beef or 97% lean ground turkey and chicken (These are more expensive items and your clients may not be able to afford them when they shop)

-Dried or canned beans-they are great low fat and low cholesterol sources of protein (Look for low sodium beans)

Purchased Canned fruit must be packed in juice or water. Light or heavy syrup is not allowed.   Choose:

-All fruit especially fresh fruit

-Read labels for sodium content %DV is only 2400 mgs/day

COMPLETE & MIXED MEAL ENTREES Purchased Shelf stable meals with greater than 720mg of sodium per serving (except canned stew) are not allowed. Lunchables or similar products are not allowed. Avoid:

-Highly processed, high sodium foods like Hamburger Helper or Macaroni and Cheese
Choose:

-To teach clients how to make a casserole or one pot meal from scratch-it's healthier and less expensive

-To give out healthy recipes

-To have cooking demos

-Butter and most margarines-use sparingly
Choose:

-Monounsaturated oils such as olive oil and canola oil which are healthier

-Spice & herb combination mixtures with lots of salt-read the ingredient list
Choose:

-To use spices & herbs to season food instead of salt

-Garlic powder and onion powder instead of garlic or onion salt
Donated Gravy, Cheese Sauce, Pickles, Dessert Sauce, Dessert Syrups & Toppings are not allowed
NUTRITIONAL AIDES Purchased Protein Shakes, Vitamins, Diet Supplements, Nutritional Supplements-Ensure, Boost, etc. are not allowed

-To drink low fat milk or fat free milk or juice to meet a portion of fluid needs
