Mary Anderson, Public Health Nurse, Onondaga County Health Department - Bureau of Disease Control

  • 15 years of service

Mary Anderson is coordinator of our Refugee Assistance Program which screens all incoming refugees for Tuberculosis. Mary has worked to insure the health and well-being of the incoming refugees while ensuring the safety of the public's health from TB. Mary has done some of her best work outside the scope of her day to day responsibilities. Through clothing drives she is able to maintain a supply of gently used coats and other warm clothes to stave off the fall and winter chill for new refugees. Resettling to New York State may be a challenge, but adjusting to the brutally cold Syracuse winters can be miserable. After inspiring some friends to join her knitting efforts to provide hats and mittens for our newest County residents, her project has grown to include Mary's church and the Onondaga County Health Department auxiliary. In every aspect of her job, Mary has gone above and beyond to help the refugees and welcome them to Onondaga County.
