State Vital Records Offices

In New York State, there are two registration areas:

  1. New York City, which includes the five counties of Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens and Richmond (Staten Island)
  2. New York State outside of New York City, which encompasses the remaining 57 counties.

The New York State Bureau of Vital Records maintains a registry of all births, marriages, divorces/dissolutions of marriage, deaths, induced termination of pregnancy/abortions, and fetal deaths that have occurred in New York State outside of New York City. Information on vital records, including obtaining your birth or death certificates, can be found at: https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/

Through a cooperative agreement, the New York State Department of Health receives data on live births, deaths, fetal deaths, induced terminations of pregnancy/abortions (abortion), marriages, and divorces/dissolutions of marriage recorded in New York City from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and on live births and deaths recorded outside of New York State to residents of New York State from other states and Canada.
