Community Calendar of Opioid Overdose Trainings

2019 - 2020 Community Calendar

Many NYSDOH Registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Programs deliver community trainings throughout New York State. Community members who participate can expect to learn, the following:

  • Signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose;
  • Steps in how to respond to an overdose and how to administer naloxone;
  • Review the NYSDOH cost-saving program Naloxone Co-payment Assistance Program (N-CAP) and identify participating pharmacies where New Yorkers can get naloxone by using their prescription coverage through their health insurance plan; and
  • The benefits of the NYS 911 Good Samaritan Law including the importance of calling emergency medical services.
Target Audience: For ALL community members - regardless of level of understanding/knowledge about opioid overdose.

Registration is the sole responsibility of the registered program offering the training.

OASAS Community Opioid Training (16 Counties)

Background

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded state grants as part of the State Targeted Response (STR) to the opioid epidemic. One of New York State's initiatives as part of the grant focuses on addressing opioid overdose related fatalities in counties showing very high rates of overdose deaths and emergency department visits related to opioid use disorder. This initiative involves tranining thousands of first responders and other likely witnesses in these counties.

Training Description

The objectives are to:

  • Increase understanding and awareness of fatal overdoses related to opioids and the impact within the community.
  • Identify risk factors for an overdose.
  • Recognize and overdose.
  • Identify the five essential steps for first responders as outlined in the SAMHSA Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit in the event of an overdose.
  • Correctly use naloxone to save lives.

This interactive training is tailored for first responders or other likely witnesses to an opioid overdose.
