About Cooling Centers

At this time, the Cooling Center Application is NOT activated.

Cooling centers are air-conditioned facilities where you can go to cool off during extreme heat. Contact your local officials to find a cooling center near you. For information on other ways to stay cool during extreme heat please visit the Extreme Heat page.

Cooling centers are places where people may go to cool down during hot weather. Cooling centers may include air conditioned facilities like libraries, community and senior centers, schools, and malls. Recreational areas, including spray parks and community pools, may be included as part of a plan for helping the public cool down during hot weather. Cooling centers are especially important for more vulnerable groups of people, including the elderly, children and those without access to air conditioning in their home or place of work. Contact your local officials to find a cooling center near you.

The Importance of Staying Cool

During the summer months, when temperatures are high and days with extreme heat often occur consecutively, it is important to stay cool. Spending a few hours a day in air conditioning during extreme heat, can prevent or reduce heat-related illness and heat stress.

Heat-related illness occurs when the body is unable to cool itself. The most common heat-related illnesses are heat stroke (sun stroke), heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash.
